HJkGT, Chapter II: Challenger

“Moshi, moshi, Taisho Masaru, speaking,” Masaru said as he picked up the phone.

He looked at the caller ID, then did a double take. The number was American, but it was not one of his uncle Touga's business associates. He looked again at the area code. “Dallas, Texas... What the...?” he thought to himself.

“Moshi, moshi, my name is Higurashi Kagome” Kagome began.

Masaru recalled her face as they ran in some of the same circles. Though, they had yet to be formally introduced. A petite brunette ningen onna with sharp skills on the street. Enough indeed to earn the respect of the Taisho house. Despite having never raced against one another. Last he heard, she and her team were in America. Making quite a name for themselves.

“Miss Higurashi, your reputation precedes you” Masaru said, with a laugh. “Now, what may I do for you?” Masaru asked.

“Masaru-san, your reputation reaches even here, as well” Kagome began.

“You flatter me with the compliment, though it is unnecessary” she continued.

“May I speak to your cousin, Taisho Sesshomaru?” Kagome asked.

“One moment, Higurashi-san” he replied.

Sesshomaru was just leaving the dining room, Masaru waved him over. He raised an elegant brow in inquiry.

“Higurashi Kagome,” Masaru replied, seeing his cousin's look.

“Hn” was all Sesshomaru said as he took the phone from Masaru.

“Ohayou gozaimasu, Higurashi-san,” Sesshomaru began.

“You wished to speak to me” he went on.

For a moment Kagome was stunned. That baritone was ice encased velvet.

“Even his voice is lethal” Kagome thought, giving herself a quick mental shake.

“Taisho-san, I wish to issue a formal challenge for your title” Kagome said.

Masaru froze mid-step hearing her words through the phone's handset.

“I have rules for every real challenger” Sesshomaru replied.

“I understand, Taisho-san” Kagome said.

“Masaru, as my Secondary will explain further” he went on.

“Domo arigato, Taisho-san” Kagome replied once more.

As Sesshomaru passed the phone to Masaru he said, “You know my terms as well as I, tell her” he finished.

“Hai” Masaru replied, with a short nod.

Sesshomaru walked away, knowing all was well in hand.

“Sesshomaru is flexible in terms of time, but he wants to meet the 'Gekkou Tenshi' before issuing formal acceptance of your challenge” Masaru said.

“I would expect no less” Kagome began.

“I will speak to my team, then get back to him with my answer” she continued.

“Very good, Sayonara, Higurashi-san” Masaru replied.

After he hung up, Masaru could not help but wonder about the 'Gekkou Tenshi' 

One particular Moonlight Angel occupied his mind. The newest addition, 'Kitana'.

Though Masaru could not have said why. Their next call came the following morning. Again, Masaru was the one to pick up the phone.

“Moshi, moshi, Taisho Masaru, speaking” he said.

“Taisho Masaru, Higurashi Kagome,” she began. “We accept his terms, but a member of my team graduates Friday” Kagome continued.

“Ah, Miss Higurashi, I am pleased to hear from you so promptly” Masaru began.

“As I am sure my cousin will be.” he finished.

“So we will have to leave Friday evening” Kagome went on.

“I understand, Higurashi-san, if you will but give me a moment, I will speak to Sesshomaru” Masaru said.

He went to Sesshomaru's study, still carrying the phone. Tapping on the partially open door to get his cousin's attention, Masaru began to speak.

“Sesshomaru, its Miss Higurashi, they've accepted your terms,” he gestured minutely to the phone in his hand.

“But a member of her team has a graduation ceremony Friday” Masaru went on. “They say they will leave that evening” he finished.

“Education is obviously of importance to the Gekkou Tenshi” Sesshomaru replied.

“I wish to speak to her” he went on.

Masaru wordlessly handed over the phone.

”Miss Higurashi, I am pleased with your decision” Sesshomaru began.

He listened as Kagome repeated what she had said to Masaru.

“Is not Friday a bit short notice?” Sesshomaru asked.

He smirked as Kagome answered in the affirmative. Having a proposition for the woman.

“I will give your team two weeks from Friday to get things in order” he began.

“I will also be sending a set of first class plane tickets” he went on.

“After all, if you were brave enough to challenge me they must surely be excellent and well worth it” he finished.

After several moments of silence, Sesshomaru spoke in an attempt to get Kagome's attention.

“Higurashi-san...” Still receiving no response, Sesshomaru quickly became irritated.

“Higurashi-san!” he said, sharply.

“Taisho-san, are you certain?” Kagome asked, at last, her voice hinting at uncertainty.

His raised voice had obviously broken whatever momentary spell the onna had been under.

“I would not have offered if that were not the case” Sesshomaru countered.

The “silly woman” remained in his thoughts but unsaid.

“Hai, I understand” Kagome began.

“My Secondary goes by an alias” she went on.

Tis' of no consequence what she may choose to call herself” Sesshomaru replied.

“Okay, domo arigato, Taisho-san” Kagome said to him.

“Hn, I will expect your arrival within a fortnight” Sesshomaru finished.

“Hai, we will see you in two weeks time” Kagome replied.

“Sayonara, Taisho-san” Kagome finished.

“Hmm... Excellent” Sesshomaru thought as he too hung up the phone.

It would seem he had a new challenger...
